Famed American philanthropist and investor Warren Buffett announced in July that he plans to accelerate his charitable donations by giving away his remaining Berkshire Hathaway shares by 2034. Buffett, the former CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has long planned to donating 99% of his wealth, and his giving continues to shape his legacy.
Over the years, Buffett’s contributions have supported various charitable causes and foundations. As part of his giving strategy, he has stated that his remaining Berkshire shares will be distributed among four family foundations, with the goal of completing the process in an 8-year timeframe.
To date, donations to these four foundations have totaled nearly $6 billion. Buffett’s approach to philanthropy indicates how you can make a lasting impact and empower others during your own lifetime.
Warren Buffett’s Commitment to Giving While Living
“Giving While Living,” a concept pioneered by Chuck Feeney, is a philanthropic strategy that can expand opportunities and positively impact communities. Buffett has modeled this philosophy through the Giving Pledge, which he co-founded in 2010, encouraging others to donate at least 50% of their wealth to charitable causes.
This year, Buffett plans to accelerate his charitable giving by distributing 9 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his late wife. In addition, he will donate 1 million Class B shares, valued at approximately $500 million, to three other foundations managed by his children: the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation and the NoVo Foundation.
Buffett’s contributions not only continue his family legacy but also strengthen the distinct mission of each organization he supports. By supporting his family’s management of specific global and local initiatives, his lifetime giving is distributed among four key areas:
- The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation: Supports future generations, global reproductive health rights and strengthens local communities by providing scholarship opportunities to Nebraska students.
- The Howard G. Buffett Foundation: Accelerates long-term impact by improving the quality of life for those in need across global communities, with a focus on conflict mitigation, countering human trafficking and food security.
- The Sherwood Foundation: Provides grants to help advance the quality of life, equality and community in Nebraska.
- The NoVo Foundation: Focuses on supporting indigenous communities, the health and well-being of women and girls, social and emotional development and promoting local sustainable economies.
The Lasting Impact of Giving During Your Lifetime
Lifetime giving allows philanthropists to see the impact of their contributions while tailoring how they can support critical programs and organizations. This enables people to intentionally embed giving strategies into their lives and careers, which shifts the focus from simply giving to strategically distributing capital for long-term objectives.
Buffett’s plan is that he and his children will dispose of his shares by December 2034. His long-term plan and efforts illustrate that directing wealth to meaningful organizations and developing a clear philanthropic vision unlocks resources across industries and increases the potential to create meaningful change.
Robert F. Smith and a Legacy of Giving Back
Robert F. Smith’s approach to giving reflects a similar philosophy. After signing the Giving Pledge in 2017, Smith made headlines with his 2019 commencement address at Morehouse College, where he eliminated student loan debt for the entire graduating class. By encouraging others to pay it forward, Smith later helped establish Student Freedom Initiative (SFI) to address the student debt crisis.
Today, he continues to give back guided by the belief that philanthropy should address more than immediate needs. His commitment focuses on six core areas, including education reform, career readiness, the arts, the outdoors, healthcare and historical preservation. Smith has placed a particular emphasis on expanding access to opportunity and helping equip more people with the skills and tools they need to shape their own futures.
By investing in these areas, Smith reinforces the importance of giving and collaborating with other philanthropists to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
