Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has contributed billions of dollars to charitable causes, and particularly has been a significant advocate for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), according to AfroTech. Her contributions are unrestricted and flexible, empowering these institutions to use the funds for what they need most, including everything from infrastructure to student support.
Scott’s support of HBCUs comes at a time when many of these institutions are dealing with historic gaps in funding. These donations will help them address the growing nationwide interest in HBCUs, fueled by factors like supportive learning environments and a longstanding role in cultural preservation.
Scott’s understanding of why HBCUs are so important comes from a worldview shaped by mentors like Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, her professor at Princeton University. Scott credits this relationship with helping her understand other people’s stories and experiences, which has become the foundation for her philanthropy.
Other philanthropists have shown similar support for HBCUs in recent years. As Chairman of Student Freedom Initiative (SFI), Robert F. Smith is particularly focused on addressing student loan debt relief. SFI has partnered with many HBCUs to help ease the burden of student loan debt for their students.
Scott’s Emphasis on Making an Impact Regardless of Scale
While Scott’s support of HBCUs is historic, she encourages small donations and community support for causes. In 2025, she wrote an essay published on the official website for Yield Giving, her philanthropic organization. In it, she notes that “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for,” referencing a Hopi prophecy from June 2000, noting that we all have a role to play in building up our communities.
Instead of focusing on dollar amounts and recognition, she emphasizes that anyone can make an impact, regardless of the scale. Countless acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion frequently go unnoticed, and these can play a role in social change. Kindness often has ripple effects, inspiring others to commit to acts of generosity.
Addressing Student Loan Debt Relief at HBCUs
Scott is part of a rich history of philanthropists who have supported HBCUs and other institutions of higher education. Her unique giving strategy helps address specific, timely needs for HBCUs.
Smith showed a similar commitment to HBCU students with his historic donation to eliminate the student loan debt of the entire 2019 Morehouse College graduating class, including the debt incurred by their parents or guardians. He asked only one thing from the students in return: to pay the gift forward to future generations. Inspired by Smith’s words, one of those graduates started the Pay It Forward Project to help connect prospective students with HBCUs.
Through his support for SFI, Smith continues to address student loan debt relief for students attending HBCUs, other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). In 2026, SFI partnered with Live Nation Urban to launch HBCU AWAREFEST. This weeklong celebration featured panel discussions, an AI innovation challenge and a benefit concert, all to raise funds and awareness for HBCU student loan debt relief.
