In November 2024, Grand Slam Track™ announced that Robert F. Smith, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners (Vista), would join its board of directors. Founded by track star Michael Johnson, Grand Slam Track is a premier global professional track league that will host four “Slams,” or events, annually, beginning in 2025.
“We are incredibly honored to welcome Robert F. Smith to Grand Slam Track,” said Johnson. “His dedication to pushing boundaries and empowering others inspires us all. Robert’s passion for sports and his commitment to building a brighter future resonate deeply with our vision for Grand Slam Track, and we are thrilled to have him join our team.”
“This is a project I deeply believe in and am delighted to be a part of,” said Smith about Grand Slam Track. “Track has always been a sport that celebrates dedication, hard work and the pursuit of greatness. I am excited to now join Grand Slam Track and work with MJ to play a part in elevating the sport while inspiring a new generation of athletes and fans around the world.”
Ahead, we share more about how Grand Slam Track promotes racial and gender diversity in sports and how Smith’s involvement with the league aligns with his pillars of philanthropy.
How Track and Field Promotes Diversity in Sports
Sports create pathways to unique opportunities for people from communities that often lack access to resources. Track and field is one of the most financially accessible sports, making it a great vehicle for success for individuals from often underrepresented communities. The sport has high participation on a high school level and provides more opportunities for athletes than other sports.
With a global professional league like Grand Slam Track, track athletes can continue their athletic careers after college. Every year, 48 Grand Slam Track racers can compete within 12 event groups. There will also be 48 Grand Slam Track challengers, who will be compensated for their appearance at individual slams.
Each slam meets World Athletics regulations and will grant participants cash prizes. Additionally, athletes’ marks will be eligible for rankings and standards. Participating athletes will also be encouraged to work with sponsors and will have access to league data and licensing opportunities to further their careers. As paid professional athletes in a new professional sports league, these athletes can also build their own brands while promoting the sport worldwide. They can also parlay this opportunity into media and licensing opportunities.
Smith’s Pillars of Philanthropy
Joining the Grand Slam Track board of directors aligns with many of Smith’s pillars of philanthropy, including:
- Fighting for racial equality
- Advocating for young people to spend more time outdoors
