Celebrating Women in Finance at the 2024 Girls Who Invest Inaugural Gala

In the world of investing, women are vastly underrepresented; only approximately 12% of fund managers globally are female. This lack of diversity is not just a missed opportunity for talented women but also undermines the growth and success of the entire financial services industry. Research shows that teams made up of a diverse set of individuals make better decisions and deliver better outcomes for companies.

Organizations like Girls Who Invest (GWI) are working to foster financial literacy and gender diversity in the investment management space. At GWI’s 2024 Inaugural Gala, the organization celebrated its mission to transform investment management by empowering young women to become leaders in finance.

Ahead, we discuss the gala, its two honorees and Robert F. Smith’s dedication to seeing more women in leadership positions within finance.

The Gala’s Impact: Empowering the Next Generation of Women

The 2024 GWI Inaugural Gala was more than just a celebration — it was a powerful step toward change for women. The gala’s fundraising helped expand GWI and fund scholarships and programs that provide young women with the tools they need to be successful in the asset management industry. These funds went to support:

  • The flagship summer and online intensive programs, which provide more than 600 students with free educational training each year
  • Internships to support more than 220 rising juniors at one of 120 investment management firms
  • Professional development programs and career advising are provided through the alumni community

The gala also celebrated two honorees: Jean M. Hynes (recognized as the 2024 Investment TrailblazeHer) and Smith (recognized with the Ally Award). Hynes is the CEO and Managing Partner at Wellington Management. As one of only five female CEOs among the 20 largest asset management firms, Hynes has inspired women in finance to break gender barriers.

Smith, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners (Vista), continues to showcase his support of GWI, alongside Hynes as a member of GWI’s Leadership Circle. Smith had a few words to say about his support of GWI’s mission and how he hopes to increase the number of women in portfolio management and executive leadership roles.

Smith’s Dedication to Promoting Gender Diversity

Smith advocates for gender diversity in the investment world, recognizing the critical need for more women in leadership roles. Through Smith and Vista’s longstanding partnership with GWI, Smith has championed the organization’s mission to empower young women to excel in finance. Whether mentoring emerging talent, advocating for equality in the workplace or speaking at GWI events, Smith has consistently used his platform to push for meaningful change. His dedication underscores the importance of creating opportunities for women to thrive in investment management, driving innovation and better outcomes for the industry.
